Covert Poetics

A LETTER HOME

somewhere between the Midwest
and the Middle East
a would be soldier
writes a poem instead
protecting freedom by exercise
he lives to live

says to a girl and the world
eat your heart out.
whatever that means.
chew and digest.
always swallow.
chase with rain in a measuring cup.

kiss your mirror and pump your fist.
today is forever.
