Covert Poetics

my dogs and i

three of us
pissing on the shed
in the backyard
five in the morning:

cozmo's losing his teeth
and three inches of fur
at the end of his tail,

lou's got a
bloody rash
on his stomach,

i've got pink-eye
and eight-months of
incurable
athlete's foot.

all our toenails need clipping

ears cleaned

stand to miss a couple months of meals

while three houses down
the ten-year prison sentence
pinching leotard
out of her snatch
before hopping in the minivan
with her father

she reminds me

none of us
has had
any of that
in a very
long time.
