Covert Poetics

B52s

I bought the record
for Terry’s party
it was his 17th birthday
there were a handful of boys
and two girls
Terry’s girlfriend Alison
and Terry’s cousin Cathy

Cathy liked me
not that I was much
of a catch
but I was the oldest boy there

and one of the lads
was two beers short of
a six pack
and another was in the backyard
vomiting up his dinner
and talking to it
so I was looking better
all the time

we kissed and tangled tongues
in the corner
under a blanket
but the pressure was too much
for me
I didn’t know what I was doing
but I didn’t want her to know that
so I tried to play it cool
took a break
went outside for a brandivino and coke
and to catch my breath

when I came back
Stuey was under the blanket
he seemed to know
what he was doing
so I put the record on instead
trying to still be cool

it said, “play me loud”
so I did
